Is having a doorman really necessary for a rental building? What are the pros and cons?
The importance of a doorman really depends on what your needs are and how flexible your budget is. Doormen provide extra security, can accept packages and dry cleaning, offer a friendly face when you leave and come home, and can help coordinate communication with the building’s super / maintenance staff.
Monthly rents tend to be significantly higher in doorman buildings than non-doorman buildings (at least several hundred dollars per month), so if these beneficial aspects are not that important to you, spending the extra money may not be worth it. However, if you can afford it, doormen can generally make your life a bit easier, especially with their ability to accept and store deliveries.
