Yes, you should definitely obtain a receipt or some form of documentation when handing in any fee or deposit, especially when cash is involved.  You always want to protect yourself and possess proof that a payment was made and acknowledged by the intended recipient.  Photocopies or scanned and saved files of checks or money orders, email confirmations from credit card payments and receipts for cash are all methods of suitable documentation.

For a cash receipt, make sure it states the amount and form of payment, purpose of payment, recipient (individual name and company), date and signature.
