Roosevelt Island provides its residents with a unique living situation where mid-end luxury and amenities can be enjoyed at reasonable prices. The neighborhood comprises the narrow island directly east of Midtown East and the Upper East Side, accessible by tram, subway and a bridge from Queens. It is filled with high rise apartment buildings, parks and sports fields. The population is overwhelmingly dominated by young professionals and families looking to get more affordable housing options just outside of Manhattan proper. The area offers residents a quieter and a bit less urban feel compared with its city counterpart across the river. Many of the living options available are contemporary, doorman buildings with great views of the Manhattan skyline. Public transportation to and from Manhattan is relatively convenient, with trams and subways running every fifteen minutes or less, except during some off-peak times late night. On Roosevelt Island, the Red Bus offers regular shuttle service, taking inhabitants up and down the island and to the subway and tram stations. The one area where the Island is a bit lacking is in the restaurant and nightlife department; however, with the rise of the new Cornell tech campus on the southern portion below the 59th Street Bridge, there is sure to be more options coming soon. In addition, it is relatively easy to make a quick trip into Manhattan to experience its wide selection. For grocery shopping, there is a market conveniently located at the northern part of the Island and a Costco right over the Roosevelt Island Bridge in Astoria.
