Who should I make the commission check payable to when paying the broker fee for an apartment rental? Is there a specific form of payment that is required?

All commission (broker fee) payments must be made to the brokerage firm where your agent is associated, according to New York State law.  You should NEVER write a check to the individual agent who is assisting you.  If you are working with an agent who requests this, you should contact his or her brokerage firm and confirm who the check should be made out to.

Brokerage firms can vary in their policies, but most generally prefer commission payments to be made in the form of certified / bank check or money order.  Some may accept credit card payments, cash or personal checks, but it is advised that you ask your agent or contact the brokerage firm to inquire about the specific requirements.
