When moving into a new apartment, which utilities do I need to set up?
This can vary from building to building, but generally tenants are responsible for setting up and paying for electric and gas, cable (television), internet and phone services. You can contact Con Edison to set up your account for electric and gas, while Time Warner, RCN and Verizon (Fios, limited availability) are the primary providers of cable / internet / phone service.
For renters, some management companies / landlords will offer free electric, cable or all utilities, as an incentive for prospective tenants to sign a lease. Check with your respective landlord about utilities, but the majority will only cover water and heat, leaving responsibility on the tenants to handle the rest.
